Shelter Pets

Today I went to the mall, and like every time anyone goes to the mall, you go by the pet store. Looking in there I saw all these cute small puppies, kittens, and various other small furry pets. Along with the pets were many people aweing over the cute animals and some people adopting them... I was like "Oh, good... that one gets to go home, thats so great." But then I started thinking about how I was at the Randolph County Humane Society the other day and how many pets there are there. Thinking about it, the puppies at the pet store had it so much better off, lota of attention daily from people, food, water, etc. The humane society dogs, on the other hand, get caged up all day, and two times a day are let outside in yet, another pin. Yes, they get food and water, and sometimes some attention, but it still isn't the same. When I used to work at the humane society and do fund raisers, all I'd ever hear from people is how stupid it was that they had to pay to get a shelter dog, but its no different than adopting a pet store dog. But what people don't know is that when they adopt a shelter dog, they are saving a life, and when the adopt a pet from a pet shop, the are supporting puppy mills. And puppy mills are terrible places and they do inhumane things to dogs, and they breed them until they can no longer breed, then they kill them. Although all of this seams sort of random, the point I'm trying to get across is that if any of you are ever debating on adopting an animal, please do it from a shelter, don't support puppy mills... I did a report on puppy mills in high school and this was a video I showed at the end, it kind of brings home the point.

  1. I’d have to completely agree with you on the ‘puppy mill’ thing. I can’t stand going into the pet stores. I am completely disgusted with the fact that they treat the dogs inhumanely and use them just to turn a profit. I would also prefer for people to adopt animals from a shelter, they really are saving a life and supporting a good cause! The video you posted was awful, especially the ending. The entire time, I kept thinking about both of my dogs. I couldn’t imagine something like that happening to them; I couldn’t allow it. It’s sad to think that some people give up their pets knowing these things could happen to them…

  2. I've never studying anything about puppy mills although I have heard of them.
I am a huge animal lover and have always wanted to work at a shelter or a pet store...
This post really inspires me to research puppy mills a little more... I would really like to know more about it.

  3. I know.. Everyone in my class that I showed that video cried, even some of hte boy, but of corse they hid it because they are manly. But yes, it is very sad and with everything I learned from that presentation I did, it made me love my pets more and everytime I walk by the pet store I feel bad since those pets are sad, but I always remember the pets i see at the shelter.
